PRESIDENTIAL ANTI-GRAFT COMMISSION (PAGC)

 Press Release

21 November 2007

PAGC CHAIR BAGS GUSI PEACE PRIZE AWARD 2007

For her relentless efforts in fighting graft and corruption in the bureaucracy, Presidential Anti-Graft Commission (PAGC) Chair Constancia de Guzman will receive the 2007 Gusi Peace Prize Award, dubbed as Asia’s equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize Award.

De Guzman will be given recognition for her sincere efforts and commitment in instituting reforms and systems to crackdown grafters in the bureaucracy. The Anti-Graft Chair was appointed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on August 24, 2004 to spearhead the all out war against all forms of corruption. Her ‘No Sacred Cows, No Cover-Ups and No Whitewash’ campaign earned the support of the civil society, organized groups and even the general public.

De Guzman pioneered in PAGC a more holistic approach in fighting corruption, using the strategies of prevention, education, deterrence (investigation and enforcement) and strategic partnership. Based on records, from 2004 to October 2007, PAGC’s efforts against graft and corruption moved the Office of the President to order the dismissal of 20 high-ranking government officials, suspension of eight (8), five (5) reprimand and one (1) accessory penalty.

The Manila-based Gusi Peace Prize Foundation, a 38-year-old non-profit organization annually gives awards to individuals worldwide based on their contributions to peace and respect for human life and dignity.

De Guzman will be joined by two other Filipino Awardees, Chief Public Attorney Persida V. Rueda-Acosta (social justice and international humanitarian law) and former Senator and Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Heherson T. Alvarez (environment protection).

Among the bigwigs of the 16 awardees to be honored at the Meralco Theater today, include California’s 38th Governor and “Terminator” fame Arnold Schwarzenegger, Voice of America’s George Bistis, Mehmet Ali Birand, Turkey’s talk show host for CNN; and Senator Ney  Robinson Suassuna of Brazil. Vice-President Noli L. de Castro on the other hand, will be the special Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker of the event.
